How to Prevent Brake Problems in Your Car

You don’t want to deal with brake problems; they make driving your automobile dangerous. There are ways to avoid brake trouble, however, and Cookeville Tire & Auto discusses them further below. Your first line of attack is prevention. Prevention is the best medicine when it comes to avoiding any type of car trouble, especially trouble with your vehicle’s brakes. Let’s keep talking about brake problems and how you can avoid them.

Be Easy On Them

One way to prevent brake problems is to go easy on the brakes. Don’t ride your brakes and don’t stop hard and short all the time, either. The harder you stop the more wear and tear you cause on your brake system parts, so give yourself plenty of room to slow down and stop with ease rather than on a dime.

Keep Them Maintained

Preventative maintenance is crucial to your automobile’s brake system. On average, your brakes should be inspected every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. The fluid level should be checked, the pad depth measured, and the condition of the rotors inspected. Follow your brakes’ factory-scheduled maintenance plan.

Look for Signs of Trouble

Your brakes will tell you if there is trouble brewing. If you catch the problem in time, the damage will be minimal and could be something as simple as low brake fluid. Signs your brakes are in trouble include

  • Grinding, scraping, or squealing noises
  • Pulling to the side while braking
  • Vibration when you apply the brakes
  • Burning chemical smells and/or smoke
  • Brake light warning while braking

Basically, you shouldn’t think about your brakes. You shouldn’t hear them or smell them. Your brake light should only come on when you set the parking brake. Any of the above bullets suggests trouble.

Don’t Put Off Repairs

If you do end up with signs of brake trouble, don’t put off having the brakes inspected. Keep in mind that the longer you take to have the brakes repaired the more expensive the damage will be. Even more important is that you could lose your brakes when you need them most and end up in an accident.
